Discovered Poetry

After a long stretch of me forgetting to return my Netflix movies in order to receive more, I finally remembered to do so and yesterday received the first disc of the first season of The Riches, which stars Eddie Izzard and Minnie Driver. Not only am I sort of in love with this show, but at the close of the first episode Eddie Izzard's character, Wayne, quotes a stanza of poetry that is so beautifully delivered that I rewatched it over and over. So I had to find the whole poem and who wrote it; thus I present the audience with it now (the last stanza was the one used in the show):

A Story That Could Be True
by William Stafford

If you were exchanged in the cradle and
your real mother died
without ever telling the story
then no one knows your name,
and somewhere in the world
your father is lost and needs you
but you are far away.

He can never find
how true you are, how ready.
When the great wind comes
and the robberies of the rain
you stand on the corner shivering.
The people who go by--
you wonder at their calm.

They miss the whisper that runs
any day in your mind,
"Who are you really, wanderer?"--
and the answer you have to give
no matter how dark and cold
the world around you is:
"Maybe I'm a king."

The quote is appropriate because Wayne is a travelling wanderer -- a gypsy, if you will. I enjoy finding new quotes and things, so I just wanted to share this with others because I think it's interesting. Also, I would recommend The Riches to everyone, it's a great show, even if the first episode is sort of heavy in places (okay, so they witness a car accident where the people die and so they take over their lives, which sounds gruesome but... trust me, okay?) and you have to accept that the characters... well, you know, do things that con artist gypsies might do. But they're really nice, I swear! :) Watch it!

(Also, while looking up William Stafford online, I found out that he was a professor at Lewis & Clark College. Awesome.)

Holy Superhero Fabric, Batman!

Since I can't think of much to say and don't have a lot of progress on projects I'm doing, here's an old project that I haven't shown anyone yet. My friend Bill who lives in Las Vegas (I like to call him "Las Vegas Bill", I think it has a ring to it) loves Batman. He also loves using the kitchen, usually for good and occasionally for evil. I found this awesome non-cartoony Batman fabric and decided to make him an apron! It came out so cool that I almost didn't give it to him!

You see there's one pot holder there... even though I went through the process of making three (I had intended to give him two). I had a little trouble with the scissors, as Charlie Brown would say. (Or actually, I had a little trouble with the bias tape.) I also haven't ever really quilted anything before, and since I'm self-taught in sewing, I had no idea what I was doing and the pieces weren't exactly lined up. I was just going along and learning all the while. Ha ha! I couldn't decide which should be the front on the apron, and while I personally preferred the yellow pocket on black, I felt like the poor yellow fabric was being covered up (it is pretty awesome, after all). So I made it reversible so Bill can wear it however he likes. He says he hasn't worn it yet -- he's afraid to get it dirty! D'oh!

Le Weekend

On Saturday my sister called me to see if I wanted to hang around with her as she did some random errands. Seeing as at the time I was just lounging in my jammies and playing my Harry Potter video game, I figured I was available for such adventures. Turns out that shortly after she spoke with me, Mom called her to see what she was up to as well. So in the end it was the three of us hanging out and doing "nothing", strictly speaking.

The first place we went to was a cool little shop that my sister found in Portland where all they sell is supplies for cross stitching. Even being a person who was never into it before, the first time she took me there to check it out, I was completely overwhelmed! We literally spent all day there. Anyway, she wanted to go there on Saturday because she wanted to find a quick little pattern to make up for her friend whose birthday is soon. She found the cutest little thing to make, it had the message "Friendship is the thread that ties two hearts together." Everyone say "Awww" now. :) The border of the phrase had little thread spools and flowers around it. I on the other hand, being crafty and sure that I can do anything that is craft related, picked out my own pattern of something to make for myself. Not that I needed anything else to work on, I've got a few half-done projects sitting around already! But it was so great I had to get it. It was just plain text that reads:
To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch... to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived -- This is to have succeeded!
This quote is from Ralph Waldo Emerson and I think it is great! So as soon as I start work on it I will have to show my progress on my blog.

After the cross stitch shop, we headed over to McMenamins for lunch, for which Mom generously paid. How cool is that?! And the bill for three people wasn't even very much -- just under $30, I think. That McMenamins... they know what they're doing over there, because it is awesome and well priced (though our waitress left something to be desired that day).

Then we headed to Troutdale to the outlet mall! We only went into three stores though, which was fine really because I always end up buying something there. Always! We went to Vitamin World, which was my sister's goal, then we bravely faced the kitchen store (I didn't buy anything! Amazing!) and finally went into Carter's. See, my nephew -- his girlfriend is pregnant. And it sounds very strange to say my nephew is having kids before me, but you have to realize that my sister is much older than me and my nephew and I are practically in the same age range. (Though even at that, he's a bit young to be having a baby!) But anyway, that's how things are and so we browsed Carter's. They have the cutest things there! We didn't get anything because we don't know yet if we're being blessed with a boy or a girl, but it was still fun to look around.

With all the baby talk going on, Mom told us about how Burlington Coat Factory had this awesome baby section and insisted we go check it out, even though it was all the way on the other side of the city. Still, we went, and in the end my sister and I came out lugging several fuzzy, soft, squashy animals that were on clearance. "It's for the baby!" I declared as my excuse. Just because in the meantime the white fluffy dog with the red heart on his bum (he was clearly a Valentine leftover) was going to spend some quality time with the giant penguin that sits on my love seat in the living room didn't mean that the baby wouldn't get it eventually. Maybe.

By then we were exhausted, or at least I was! So I was glad to head home. But it was a pretty cool day hanging out with my sister and mom -- we don't really do that too much, all together anyway.

Other than that, I spent Sunday in my jammies until the evening when I visited some friends for our (sorta weekly) game night.

That's all for now! (Isn't it enough?) :)

Hi!

What am I going to do with this blog space? I don't know! Hopefully I'll think of something! :)
